Under
the supervision of their Service Coordinator, the
caregiver assists the client in their home with personal
care needs, personal hygiene, preparing and serving
meals, laundry, light house cleaning and activities
appropriate to the resident's level of function. The
caregiver reports any injury or illness of the resident
to their Service Coordinator and maintains a courteous,
responsible manner at all times when working with the
resident. The caregiver also documents pertinent
information in daily Progress Notes.
Caregiver responsibilities will vary from
client to client depending upon the physical impairment,
memory loss or functional ability of the resident. In
some cases, a schedule may be posted as to which chores
should be done on which days. In general, the
responsibilities include:
· Assist
the resident with personal care such as changing
clothes, bathing, washing hair, brushing teeth, putting
on make-up or shaving.
· Assist
the client in preparing all meals.
· Provide
juices or liquids to the resident every two hours to
avoid dehydration.
· Contact
Service Coordinator with any problems in carrying out
any assigned duties.
· Plan
and carry out activities with the resident according to
his or her ability to function. This may include going
on outings for pleasure or shopping.
· Assist
the client in doing the laundry.
· Assist
the client in light house cleaning such as keeping the
kitchen and bathroom clean, dusting and vacuuming.
· Empty
wastebaskets daily and place the garbage outside for
regular collection weekly.
· Guide
resident in choosing television programming, making
certain that if any memory problem exists, the programs
watched are not violent or would not cause anxiety.
· Make
certain the household is safe for the resident by
keeping it free of clutter, throw rugs or other causes
of falls.
· If
resident has a memory problem, make certain that all
medications, cleaning supplies, and alcoholic drinks are
locked in a cabinet.
· Respond
to the resident, their family and their friends in a
kind and loving manner at all times.
· Maintain
legible and complete
Progress Notes.
When Special Live-in Care Inc. looks for
caregivers, we look for certain personal characteristics
in the people we hire.
· A
caregiver naturally and truly cares about and has
compassion and empathy for people.
· A
caregiver is willing and able to learn the skills needed
to care for each individual client.
· A
caregiver enjoys working with elderly people.
· To
be employed with Special Live-in Care Inc., a caregiver
must have excellent references.
Things That Caregivers Don't Do
Special Live-in Care Inc. caregivers
should NOT perform the following tasks:
· Heavy
lifting
· Moving
furniture
· Washing
windows
· Mowing
lawns
· Hazardous
duties
If a client has a need for these types of
services, the Service Coordinator can make arrangements
to have them done.
Documentation – Progress Notes
All activities with a resident are
documented on a daily basis in the
Progress Notes
journal. There is a bound journal clearly marked
Progress Notes for each Special Live-in Care Inc.
client. Each entry is dated and signed or initialed.
The following are some examples of what is documented in
the Progress Notes, but is not all inclusive.
· Activities
(shopping, cleaning, outings, etc.)
· Doctor's
appointments
· Visitors
(family, friends, supervisor, etc.)
· Unusual
occurrences (emergencies, illness, incident reports)
· Meals
· Personal
care
· Medications
· Complaints
· Observations
Progress Notes
are a permanent part of the client's record. All
documentation is confidential. This documentation is
only read by someone other that the primary caregiver
for the purpose of improving the care of the resident.
